Hypnotherapy

Focused, Ethical, Client-Centered Change Work

Meet Your Hypnotherapist

James Sargent, t-LMHC, is a licensed mental health counselor and certified hypnotherapist through the American Institute of Healthcare Professionals and the American College of Hypnotherapy. He is drawn to hypnotherapy because it allows people to slow down, listen inward, and work with their nervous system in a way that feels respectful rather than forceful. James appreciates how hypnotherapy can reach places that insight alone sometimes cannot—helping clients loosen long-held patterns, reduce distress, and reconnect with a sense of agency and calm. His work is trauma-informed, ethically grounded, and rooted in collaboration, consent, and a deep respect for each client's timing, autonomy, and lived experience.

What Is Hypnotherapy?

Hypnotherapy is a guided, collaborative therapeutic process that uses focused attention, relaxation, and imagery to support insight, behavioral change, and emotional regulation. Hypnosis is a naturally occurring state of concentration that most people experience in everyday life, such as becoming absorbed in a book or music.

At Ivory Lotus Therapy, hypnotherapy is provided by a licensed mental health counselor with specialized training in clinical hypnosis and trauma-informed care, and is offered only within the provider's scope of training and licensure.

Hypnosis is not mind control, and you remain aware, present, and able to stop or redirect the process at any time.

How Hypnotherapy Works

Hypnotherapy helps clients enter a state of focused, calm awareness where therapeutic suggestions and imagery can be more effectively integrated.

Each session includes:

  • Goal clarification

  • Guided induction into focused attention

  • Therapeutic work aligned with your goals

  • Integration and grounding

Participation is always voluntary, and clients may stop at any time. Hypnotherapy is a multi‑session process, not a one‑session intervention.

Possible Side Effects

Most clients experience hypnotherapy as calming and focused. Temporary effects may include:

  • Emotional release or heightened awareness

  • Fatigue or lightheadedness

  • Vivid imagery or dreams

  • Increased emotional processing for 24–48 hours

These effects are typically short-lived and addressed during session integration.

What Hypnotherapy May Help With

Hypnotherapy may support:

  • Stress and anxiety reduction

  • Habit change (e.g., smoking, nail biting)

  • Sleep improvement

  • Performance anxiety

  • Chronic pain support

  • Phobias and fears

  • Medical/procedural anxiety

  • Confidence and motivation

  • Mind‑body regulation

It is a complementary approach and does not replace medical, psychiatric, or psychotherapy treatment when clinically indicated

Is Hypnotherapy Right for You?

Hypnotherapy may be a good fit if you:

  • Are motivated for change

  • Prefer focused, experiential work

  • Want longer sessions than traditional therapy

  • Prefer private-pay services

  • Are open to mind-body approaches

Hypnotherapy may not be suitable for individuals with:

  • Active psychosis or untreated schizophrenia

  • Acute mania

  • Severe dissociation without stabilization

  • Cognitive impairment limiting informed consent

  • Active intoxication or withdrawal

A brief screening is required to determine readiness and appropriateness.

Hypnotherapy is not used for memory recovery, regression for factual accuracy, or any forensic/legal purpose.
